Casita Academy ADU Accelerator Workshop Series
Unpermitted ADUs are widespread in neighborhoods throughout California, providing housing access for tenants and rental income for homeowners, though without health and safety oversight or tenant protections. Studies suggest that hundreds of thousands of unpermitted ADUs exist statewide. While legalizing these units brings significant benefits to all involved, a lengthy and expensive compliance process can create barriers and deter homeowners from coming forward. Recognizing this dilemma for homeowners, the CA State Legislature passed AB 2533 – co-sponsored by Casita Coalition – creating a statewide framework for legalizing unpermitted ADUs.

Casita Academy is the core educational program for Casita Coalition, a statewide nonprofit working to advance ADUs and middle housing solutions as a pathway to create thriving neighborhoods with a variety of attainable home types for people in all ages and stages of life.
